The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) blocked Cairo giants Zamalek from registering their new players over unpaid dues, the football governing body announced on Wednesday.

“The winter transfer window, from 1 to 31 January, is officially over and all the new deals were registered for all clubs after reaching a compromise over their dues, except Zamalek,” the EFA said in a statement posted on Facebook after midnight.

“The EFA contacted Zamalek officials to solve the issue before the deadline, but the club representatives came in the dying minutes of Tuesday to register three new players without a plan to pay the late dues,” the statement added.

During the January window, the Whites signed two new players; Aswan Moroccan midfielder Ahmed Belhadji on loan, and NBE striker Nasser Mansi. They also restored the services of their centre-back Mahmoud Shabana after ending his loan spell at Smouha.

Zamalek President Mortada Mansour accused the EFA officials of obstructing the registration of the trio after insisting not to receive cheques for the dues.

Egyptian League holders Zamalek currently lie at the fourth place of the table with 29 points from 16 games, eight points behind leaders and archrivals Ahly who still have one game in hand.
