Atallah, one of the most notable Egyptian journalists and columnists, was a former chairman of state-owned Al-Ahram daily newspaper and the founding editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram Al-Massai, an evening daily publication by Al-Ahram news foundation.
He also led the board of the then-turbulent Zamalek SC in 2005 and was the founding editor-in-chief of Al-Zamalkwiya magazine.
The notable writer was born in 1943 in Gharbia governorate in the Nile Delta. He graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture at Cairo University in 1963.
Atallah joined the army ahead of the 6th of October 1973 victory of Arab coalition forces led by Egypt and Syria against the Israeli occupation in Sinai and the Golan Heights, and later rose as a prominent political and strategic analyst and writer.
Atallah was also known for his daily column Kol Youm (translated as Everyday) in Al-Ahram, where he would address political and social developments in Egypt and the Arab world.
The board of Zamalek SC issued a statement mourning the death of Atallah.
