This came during the meeting on Wednesday of the two foreign ministers on the sidelines of the 42nd Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa.

Comoros Islands is due to assume the chairmanship during the AU Summit that is slated for February 18-19, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.

Comoros President Azali Assoumani will replace Senegal’s Macky Sall – the current chairperson of the AU – later this month at the annual AU Summit in Addis Ababa.

Assoumani's chairmanship follows the recent withdrawal of Kenyan President William Ruto from the race, making Comoros the first island state to lead the continental bloc.

During Wednesday's meeting, FM Shoukry expressed Egypt's confidence in the Comorian leadership of the AU at a time when the continent faces many political, economic and security challenges.

Shoukry also stressed Egypt's readiness to support the Comorian chairmanship of the union and to strengthen collective African action under the umbrella of the AU, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

Moreover, he stressed to his Comorian counterpart Egypt’s interest in promoting cooperation with Comoro Islands in the fields of economy, trade and investment.

Shoukry said that Egypt looks forward to augmenting the role of its companies in carrying out projects under the "Emerging Comoros Plan 2030" adopted by the Comorian government.

He also stressed Egypt’s interest in cooperating with Comoro islands in the fields of marine fishing and the establishment of fish farms.

Egypt, he said, will provide support in the field of capacity building and knowledge transfer through various training programs organized by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), as well as through grants provided by Al-Azhar and the Ministry of Higher Education.

The meeting also discussed bilateral relations between Egypt and the Comoro Islands and built on the meeting of the two leaders of both countries in Egypt in 2019.

In 2019, the Comorian president had headed his country's delegation at the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development.

During the meeting, Shoukry invited his Comorian counterpart to visit Egypt  to advance joint cooperation.

Both ministers agreed to intensify consultation and coordination during the coming period under the umbrella of the AU.
