El-Sisi announced his directives during the celebration on Monday of Egyptian Women's Day.
Earlier, the President held a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of social solidarity Nevine Al-Qabbaj to discuss the efforts of the National Committee to limit the number of indebted men and women within the framework of the Presidential initiative “Egypt supports those in debt.”
In statements to the media, Minister of Interior Mahmoud Tawfik stated that 85 indebted men and women would be released shortly following the President’s directives, adding that El-Sisi also instructed to support those in debt during their imprisonment.
In April 2022, the Presidential Pardon Committee, which was initially formed in October 2016, was reactivated as per El-Sisi’s directives during the Egyptian Family Iftar banquet.
The committee is in charge of reviewing the cases of those imprisoned for political crimes and others who meet certain criteria, such as having more than one relative in jail.
The scope of the committee, which started work immediately upon reactivation, has been expanded to cooperation with state institutions and NGOs and to include male and female indebted prisoners.
