The QS World University Rankings, compiled by British Quacquarelli Symonds, are considered one of the most influential university rankings in the world.

Egyptian universities were well represented in the latest QS World University Rankings for science-related disciplines, featuring in 33 of the 54 sub-disciplines, according to a ministry statement released on Saturday.

Cairo University was the most prominently featured, with 32 majors represented; followed by Ain Shams University in 17 majors; Alexandria University in 15 majors; and Mansoura University in 10 majors.

Other institutions included in the classification were Assiut, Al-Azhar, Zagazig, Beni Suef, Helwan, Tanta, Suez Canal, The American University in Cairo and The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport.

Adel Abdel-Ghaffar, media advisor and official spokesperson for the ministry, explained that the QS global classification is based on a variety of factors, including academic renown, professor-to-student ratio, academic research, and the ratio of international academics and the ratio of foreign students.

Abdel-Ghaffar noted that the number of Egyptian universities included in the different classifications is increasing steadily, with competition among institutions to join these classifications.

Cairo University and The American University in Cairo were represented in five majors: Arts and Humanities; Economics; Education and Training; Modern Languages; and Financial Accounting.

Cairo University led Egyptian universities in petroleum engineering, ranking 40 globally, followed by Alexandria University and The American University in Cairo, which placed 51-100 globally.

Tanta and Al-Azhar Universities, along with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport, are ranked 101-150 worldwide.

Cairo University stood out among Egyptian universities in seven scientific disciplines: veterinary sciences (51-70), dentistry (51-80); hospitality management (101-150); archaeology (101-150); statistics administration (151-200); law (151-200); and linguistics (251-300).

Egyptian universities and research centres have made considerable advancements in international rankings in 2022, with 36 Egyptian universities listed on the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, up from 31 in 2021.
