The presidential initiative was launched in April 2020 at a cost of EGP 1.6 billion. In August 2022, El-Sisi ordered EGP 600 million be added for surgical procedures on waiting lists.
The initiative has provided treatment for 1.6 million patients thus far, Fahmy said earlier.
In recent years, Egypt has launched several health-focused initiatives, including the 100 Million Healthy Lives presidential initiative, which targets raising the awareness of reproductive health and family planning; and the Egyptian Women's Health Initiative, which seeks to detect cancer at an early stage.
The government has also launched the Pre-Marriage Medical Test Initiative, the Mother and Fetus presidential initiative and the campaigns to support the health of newborns and school students. This is in addition to the detection of hereditary diseases and healthcare for the elderly.
On Sunday, El-Sisi held a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar to follow up on efforts to upgrade the healthcare system in Egypt and the latest developments on the various presidential health initiatives.
During the meeting, the president asserted that the state agenda prioritises healthcare and that the government is constantly working to improve the healthcare system nationwide.
