The agreement covers financing, design, construction, utilization, maintenance, and ownership transfer of the new facility, which will be built in Abu Rawash.

Yasmine Fouad, the Minister of Environment, stated that the Egyptian government has adopted a national strategy to convert 4.5-5 million tons of solid waste produced annually into electricity. Fouad added that in April 2020, the government invited companies to invest in the waste-to-energy sector, receiving applications from 92 firms. Of these, 53 were qualified by a technical committee, including 19 Egyptian and 34 foreign companies.

Moreover, the minister noted that the government aims to implement 16 waste-to-energy plants with direct investments of about $1.6 billion by the private sector.

Robert Valk, CEO of Renergy Group Partners, said that the new plant will have the capacity to process 1,200 tons of household waste and convert it into electricity. He added that the plant will be the first of its kind to be launched under the Build-Own-Operate system.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait disclosed that the government is planning eight waste recycling and power generation projects, valued at EGP 10 billion, as part of Egypt's green transformation.
