Algerian guards killed on Morocco border: Report

AFP , Friday 3 Aug 2012

Three Algerian border guards have been killed by unidentified gunmen in an ambush near the frontier with Morocco, the Internet site of the daily El Watan reported on Friday.

It said the three Algerians were shot dead on Thursday when their patrol came under fire in clashes of "great intensity" between Zouia and Roubane.

The border between the two countries has been closed since 1994 following an attack in Marrakesh which Morocco blames on Algerian intelligence.

Algeria and Morocco have been at odds over Western Sahara since Rabat occupied the former Spanish colony in 1975, with Algiers backing the separatist Polisario Front.
