During the call, Shoukry discussed ways to mitigate the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people and stressed Egypt's keenness to alleviate that suffering, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry added.

Shoukry affirmed Egypt's full support for the efforts of the UN envoy to reach a comprehensive political settlement under Syrian ownership, in line with Security Council resolution No. 2254.

He also affirmed the great priority that Egypt attaches to restoring  security and stability in sisterly Syria and ending all forms of terrorism and foreign interference.

The two sides agreed to continue consultation and coordination during the coming period.

For his part, the UN envoy expressed his full appreciation for Egypt's role and its continuous support for the United Nations in resolving the Syrian crisis.

Last week, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad and discussed efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement to the Syrian crisis.

Mekdad’s trip to Cairo is the first visit by a top Syrian diplomat to Egypt in over a decade.

The two officials had a one-on-one meeting and then were joined by their respective delegations. They tackled issues of mutual concern, including regional issues.

During the meeting, the Syrian minister discussed various aspects of the Syrian crisis, including past and current economic, humanitarian, and security challenges faced by the Syrian people.
