This came during a phone call between President El-Sisi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss recent developments in Sudan, according to  a statement released by the spokesman of the Egyptian Presidency Ahmed Fahmy, on Saturday evening.

During the call, El-Sisi stressed to Guterres that “Egypt is deeply concerned over the ongoing clashes in Sudan,’ warning of  “their dangerous repercussions on stability in the country.”

“Sudan is passing through a critical historical moment, which necessitates the exercise of the utmost degree of wisdom and restraint,” El-Sisi told the UN secretary-general.

For his part, Guterres stressed his keenness on communicating with the Egyptian president in light of the pivotal role of Egypt in safeguarding security and stability in the region, especially in supporting the transitional phase in Sudan.

The UN secretary-general said he calls on all Sudanese sides to cease all hostilities in order to restore calm and start dialogue to resolve the current crisis.

Guterres warned that the escalation in fighting would have catastrophic consequences on and civilians and exasperate an already dire humanitarian situation in Sudan, according to Fahmy.

Earlier in the day, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement calling on all sides in Sudan to exercise maximum restraint and to put an end to the armed conflict to preserve the lives of the Sudanese people and their resources.

Since the early hours of Saturday morning, fierce clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have raged in the capital of Khartoum and elsewhere in the country with reports of tens killed or injured.
