The AL Council convened an emergency session at the level of permanent representatives, at the request of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, following clashes that erupted between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday morning
The council expressed deep regret for the casualties in the clashes and extended sincere condolences to the victims’ families as well as the entire Sudanese people.
During the meeting, Sudan's representative at the league Al-Sadiq Omar Abdullah said it was the RSF that initiated the fighting Saturday morning, referring to them as "rebels."
He added that the Sudanese army struck back and foiled the RSF attacks and was in control of the situation.
Abdullah called on Arab states to mediate for a calm and peaceful settlement in Sudan "away from international interventions."
For his part, Obaida El-Dandarawy, the official in charge of the AL affairs at Egypt's Foreign Ministry, said that "Egypt confirms and reiterates its genuine commitment to supporting the stability and territorial integrity of Sudan."
So far, at least 56 civilians were killed, while dozens of the members of the rival forces were reported dead on Sunday. Additionally, the Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate reported on Sunday that around 600 people were wounded, including civilians and fighters.
The AL council is willing to expend all efforts to assist Sudan and resolve the crises in a sustainable manner in line with the people’s interests, the council announced in its statement.
The council further warned against the repercussions of escalating violence in Sudan, stressing that no one can predict the impact of such escalation on Sudan and the region.
Lastly, the AL council invited all Arab ambassadors in the capital Khartoum to coordinate with each other and establish consistent communication with the Sudanese authorities and all relevant parties to provide the necessary support for the restoration of stability.
