"It is heartrending to see Sudanese brethren observe Eid Al-Fitr frightened at their homes, in fear of their lives, with children, sick and elderly people living among them, while the fighting goes on, leading to loss of life and unbearable suffering among civilians," Abul-Gheit said in a humanitarian appeal to the leaders of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) the Rapid Support Forces (RAF) on Wednesday.

Abul-Gheit said his purely humanitarian appeal has nothing to do with any political stance towards the crisis in Sudan or who must be held accountable for igniting hostilities or sustaining hostilities.

“The people of Sudan, women and children, must be the top priority now,” said the chief of the pan-Arab body, reminding the warring factions of the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, and urging them to stick to a comprehensive ceasefire deal during Eid Al-Fitr holiday.

The world has been calling for the halt of violence in Sudan amid clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, aka Hemedti, who commands the paramilitary RSF.

Since then, around 300 people have been killed in Sudan, 3,000 have been injured, and thousands of Sudanese have fled Khartoum, where the clashes started.

The fighting between the army and paramilitaries raged for a fifth day after a 24-hour truce collapsed.
