The Palestinian Foreign Ministry rejected what they described as “inappropriate, false and discriminatory” remarks by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Israel’s 75th anniversary, the Palestinian News Agency WAFA reported.

Her "made the desert bloom" comment was noteworthy as it is a racist anti-Palestinian trope.

“Such propaganda dehumanises and erases the Palestinian people and falsifies their rich history and civilisation. Likewise, such narratives perpetuate the continued and racist denial of the Nakba expulsions and whitewashes Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid regime,” the ministry said in a statement.

It also added that “such anti-Palestinian rhetoric undermines the European Union’s standing and casts serious doubts on its declared commitment to international law and human rights.”

"It is also a betrayal to European citizens who do not endorse such erasure of the Palestinian people.”

The Foreign Ministry said the European Commission President owes European citizens and the people of Palestine an apology.
