The committee also aims to protect state institutions in Sudan from the threat of collapse they face, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said in a press conference on Sunday after an emergency meeting of the Arab League.

The decision to form the liaison committee on Sudan reflects the necessity for Arabs to move immediately and effectively, Shoukry said, affirming the need to return to dialogue in Sudan.

“It is necessary to return to political dialogue in Sudan as it faces existential threats,” he said.

The top Egyptian diplomat also stressed putting Sudan's interest and security before narrow considerations.

Shoukry stressed that the ongoing clashes in Sudan affect its neighbours -- particularly Egypt -- and other nations in the region with whom Sudan has a complex relationship.

He highlighted the Egyptian efforts to receive several Sudanese fleeing the clashes that erupted in mid-April between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Egypt evacuated around 4,000 nationals from Sudan, the top Egyptian diplomat added.

The Arab foreign ministers held a meeting today, chaired by Egypt, at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo to discuss the Syrian crisis and the Palestinian cause.

The league welcomed the return of Syria after suspending its membership for more than a decade and agreed to form a ministerial contact committee to seek a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis.

The ministers also held an extraordinary meeting to discuss the challenges facing the Palestinian cause and the means of confronting the Israeli infringement on the rights of the Palestinian people.

They also discussed means to revive the political process and resume negotiations to achieve fair and comprehensive peace and establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
