The earthquake originated at a depth of 20.73 km and struck at approximately 10:05 pm (Cairo local time), about 111 km away from the coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

No casualties or significant property damages were reported, but the intensity of the tremor was still felt by the people in the area, stated the NRIAG.

On Saturday, a 3.85 magnitude earthquake hit North Sinai's El-Tor city, 100 kilometres away from Sharm El-Sheikh.

The most devastating earthquake in the country's recent history was a 5.8 Richter quake in 1992, causing the loss of 541 lives and injuring nearly 6,500 people in Greater Cairo.
