Egypt aim to edge closer to qualification for a record-extending 25th Africa Cup of Nations when they face Guinea in a crucial Group D qualifier on Wednesday.

The Pharaohs currently top the group on goal difference from Guinea, with both sides on nine points from four matches.

A win for either team in Marrakech will put them in pole position to finish as group winners.

After a sluggish start of their campaign, Egypt has moved a gear up with coach Rui Vitoria.

The seven-time AFCON champions started their qualifying campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Guinea, but suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Ethiopia in their next match.

However, they have high confidence after a thrilling 2-1 friendly win over Belgium last November and went on to beat Malawi on both legs to go top.

Guinea, meanwhile, have hit form at the right time, winning their last three qualifying matches to revive their campaign after losing to Egypt in their opener.

They now need just a point from their last two games to seal a third straight AFCON appearance.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah headlines an Egypt squad looking to extend their six-game unbeaten run against Guinea. Salah is expected to lead the attack, supported by Omar Marmoush, Mahmoud “Trezeguet” Hassan and Mostafa Mohamed.

Vitoria will have to do without injured midfielders Mohamed Elneny and Tarek Hamed as well as key central defenders Ahmed Hegazy and Mahmoud "El Wensh" Hamdi who have been ruled out with lengthy knee injuries.

“We will play to win tomorrow to secure our qualification. Some players are suffering from fatigue but we will only play those who are 100% fit,” Vitoria told the pre-game press conference.

Guinea coach Kaba Diawara has also named a strong squad, including the likes of Issiaga Sylla, Naby Keita and Francois Kamano.

While both teams appear evenly matched on paper, Egypt's superior quality and experience at this level should give them the edge.
