Mostafa Kamel re-elected as Egyptian Musician Syndicate s head by acclimation
Over the next four years, the 53-year-old will continue to lead the union which is responsible for regulating music performances and granting permissions to musicians.
Kamel was elected in October to complete the remaining term of Hany Shaker who resigned in June.
During his tenure, Kamel has faced various challenges within the union, including corruption allegations, resource shortage, the need for pensions, and the legalisation of the previously-antagonised mahraganat and rap performers.
The position of head of the Musicians Syndicate has historically been a centre of power struggles since its establishment in 1942 at the initiative of Um Kalthoum, with the goal of addressing the issues faced by musicians and singers.
Most known for hits like Teslam El-Aiady, Eshta Yaba, Oul Ya Rab, Kamel is serving his third spell. His first tenure was between 2013 and 2015 where he also filled for ousted Iman El-Bahr Darwish.
Despite the union’s work, Kamel remained active as an artist in the past months, releasing a few songs that he also wrote, like Kolo Kedb “All is Lying” and Ebn El-Mahzoza “Son of a Lucky.”
