El Gouna Film Festival names Marianne Khoury Artistic Director for 6th edition

El Gouna Film Festival has named renowned Egyptian producer and director Marianne Khoury was the artistic director of the 6th El Gouna Film Festival, which will be held 12-20 October 2023.

The prestigious international festival is returning for a sixth edition after a two-year hiatus following its 5th edition that was held in 2021. 

Filmmaker Amir Ramses had served as the festival's artistic director from its launching in 2017 through 2021.

Khoury, 64, collaborated with renowned Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine in numerous capacities, including as assistant director

She directed her first film, a documentary, The Times of Laura in 1999.

This was followed by another documentary Women Who Loved Cinema in 2002.

Since, she has directed and produced films on various social issues of identity, nostalgia and social exclusion, garnering critical acclaim and multiple awards.


Khoury’s documentary Shadows (2010) tackled personal and social perceptions of the mentally ill.

The film premiered at the Opening of Venice Film Festival (2010).

It won the FIPRESCI award at Dubai Film Festival in 2010.

It also won the Italian Rai award at the International Festival of Mediterranean Documentary and Current Affairs Films in 2011.

Let’s Talk

In 2019, Khoury produced and directed Let's Talk.

The film competed in the 32nd edition of IDFA International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

It received the Audience Award at the 41st Cairo International Film Festival.

Very personal in character, Let’s Talk is a conversation between her and her daughter about ordinary things in life: death, life, illness, identity and marriage. 


Khoury is a managing partner at the prestigious Cairo-based production company Misr International Films.

"Khoury was instrumental in introducing the first edition of the Panorama of the European Film in Cairo in 2004 and Zawya, an art-house cinema, in 2014,” El Gouna Film Festival said in its announcement of naming Marianne Khoury as art director.

Khoury’s latest initiative, The Dahshur Workshops, is dedicated to the mentoring and development of films made by emerging Egyptian and Arab talent. 

In 2022, Khoury was awarded France's Legion of Honour, in the degree of Chevalier (Knight).
