Egyptian band Bahiyya gave a concert within a rich line-up of the ongoing Shubbak festival in London.

"Bahiyya have marked their success in Egypt and beyond by reviving some of the greatest Arabic heritage and folk music, taking both a sarcastic and philosophical approach to their re-arrangements and interpretations… all with revolutionary relish and enthusiasm," reads the concert's promotional material.

The concert, which took place on 25 June, is part of the ongoing Shubbak festival that spans between 23 June and 9 July 2023.

Since its launch in 2011, Shubbak, the largest biennial festival presenting various forms of contemporary Arab culture in the UK, has showcased several regional performers, many of whom made their UK debuts during the festival.

This year, though, the festival presents not only Arab artists residing in their respective countries but also those living in the UK.

Through performing covers of songs by music icons – such as Sayyed Darwish, Sheikh Imam, and Zakaria Ahmed – Bahiyya aim to revive some of the classical masterworks of Arab music.

Since its formation in 2011, the band has performed in many venues across Egypt. Their participation in Shubbak marks their UK debut.

Bahiyya's founding members include Omar Ayyat (oud and vocal), Omar Khater (vocal), Ahmad Abdel-Wahab (violin), Sherif Essam (guitar), Ziad Hesham (bass guitar), Maged Nagati (drums), Omar Samy (percussions), and Abdel-Ghany (oud).
