Cairo and Ankara jointly announced on Tuesday that the decision aims to "reestablish normal relations between the two countries and demonstrates their mutual determination to enhance bilateral relations for the best interest of both the Turkish and Egyptian peoples."

Aboul Gheit stated that this decision reflects positive progress, which contributes to calming the situation in the region and strengthens diplomatic communication as a mechanism for conflict resolution.

He added that "relations between Arab countries and their neighbours must be based on mutual respect and international laws for the shared interests of their peoples."

Egypt and Turkey's relations have improved since last year after severing diplomatic ties in 2013.

Ministerial-level talks were held throughout the year in both countries' capitals to normalize relations.

In May 2023, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan agreed to "upgrade diplomatic relations" and exchange ambassadors during a congratulatory phone call after the latter's re-election.
