In May 2013, El-Sisi, then-Minister of Defence, visited Ankara, where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and senior Turkish officials.

During the upcoming visit, El-Sisi will meet with Erdogan to discuss bilateral relations as well as regional developments, according to the Turkish Independent.

Upgraded relations
 

On Tuesday, Egypt and Turkey announced the upgrading of diplomatic relations to the ambassadorial level as the two countries move forward with measures to restore relations on all levels, ending a ten-year rift.

The Egyptian foreign ministry affirmed that the upgrade of diplomatic relations with Ankara is a culmination of recent diplomatic efforts and a prelude to stronger economic and trade ties between the two countries.

In Late May, President El-Sisi congratulated Erdogan on his re-election in a phone call, with the two leaders agreeing to boost their diplomatic relations as well as exchange ambassadors.

In November 2022, the two presidents exchanged greetings in a brief encounter on the sidelines of the inauguration of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, agreeing to jump-start bilateral relations between the two countries.

Amid thawing in relations between the two countries, Egyptian Minister Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan agreed recently to normalize relations between the two countries.

Economic ties uninterrupted
 

Despite the rift politically in the past decade, economic and trade relations between the two countries continued unabated.

Trade volume between Egypt and Turkey rose by 14 percent to $7.7 billion in 2022, up from $6.7 billion the previous year, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics.

Moreover, Turkish businesses continued to make significant investments in various industries in Egypt.
