FC Midtjylland's international midfielder Emam Ashour is close to returning to the pitch after recovering from a muscle injury that has kept him out of action since April, according to Egypt national team doctor Mohamed Abou Elela.

The 25-year-old star, who sustained the season-ending injury during a cup match against Viborg, needed 10 to 12 weeks to recover, the doctor explained.

"We are in direct contact with FC Midtjylland to coordinate the player's rehab programme as he recovers well and is very close to returning to training," Abou Elela said during a television programme.

Although Ashour’s move to Ahly has not been officially announced by the club, assistant coach Sami Komsan has praised the signing of the former Zamalek midfielder from the Danish side.

Pyramids FC had also expressed interest in signing the former Zamalek star.

Ashour signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Danish Midtjylland on the winter transfer market deadline day after leaving Cairo giants Zamalek.

Since joining FC Midtjylland, Ashour has played seven games and scored two goals with the Danish side.

Ashour was a member of Egypt's U23 squad that won the African Cup of Nations in 2020. In November 2021, Ashour made his debut with the Pharaohs, playing 11 games so far.
