One person remains trapped under the rubble while five people, including passersby, were injured, according to the source.

In a separate statement, the Public Prosecution cited two officials responsible for the neighbourhood, the director of organization and the director of the housing district. They said that the five-story building was constructed without any permits before 1980, when the country’s construction law was passed.

The building had not updated or renovated in the following years despite directives to do so, they added.

Furthermore, both directors attributed the collapse to a resident’s recent demolition of his apartment’s walls on the first floor, despite warnings not to do so.

The prosecution has moved to detain both the resident and the contractor responsible for the walls’ destruction

The prosecution also commissioned the police to conduct a full investigation.

They also commissioned the Administrative Prosecution to take all necessary measures to preserve the lives and property of citizens adjacent to the collapsed property.

Additionally, they directed Cairo’s Housing Authority to form a tripartite committee to fully examine the property and the cause of its collapse.

Finally, they ordered the governorate’s Committee for Ruined Facilities to investigate the collapsed building’s neighboring properties to determine whether they need to be evacuated or not.

Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj instructed EGP 60,000 in compensation to be paid to the families of the deceased and the injured parties.

Investigations are ongoing, the prosecution concluded.

A string of tragedies

Egypt has recently experienced a number of building disasters resulting in injuries and fatalities to residents, often due to old or compromised structures. This latest tragedy is part of that series.

building collapse in Beheira on Sunday killed three people, including a 10-year-old child.

Additionally, two lives were lost in Alexandria due to an old building collapse on Saturday.

Another two-storey building collapsed in the Gomrok neighborhoud of west Alexandria on 6 July, resulting in one fatality.

The Sidi Bishr neighborhoud in Alexandria experienced the deadliest building collapse this year before the most recent incident, with a 13-storey building collapse on 26 June killing 10 people.
