According to the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zeid, Deputy Assistant Minister of foreign affairs and Assistant for European Affairs Yasser Hashem conveyed to the Danish ambassador Egypt's deep dismay over the recent Quran burning incidents on 25 July in front of the embassies of several Arab and Muslim countries in Denmark.

Hashem reiterated during the meeting Egypt's outright rejection of such incidents, calling on the authorities in Denmark, and other countries that witnessed similar incidents, to take tangible measures to put a permanent end to them.

He stressed to the Danish ambassador that the continuity of such regrettable incidents is unrelated to the principle of freedom of expression and constitutes a clear violation of the freedom of belief and religious diversity.

These incidents contradict international agreements by promoting extremist rhetoric, hatred, Islamophobia, and religious contempt, stressed Hashem during the meeting.

They also undermine efforts to enhance cultural and religious dialogue among people worldwide, he added.

Earlier this week, a Danish far-right group called “Danish Patriots” began to burn copies of the Holy Quran in front of the embassies of Arab and Muslim countries.

The group burnt a copy of the Holy Quran on Monday in front of the Iraqi embassy.

On Tuesday, the group burned two copies in front of the Turkish and Egyptian embassies in Copenhagen.

Denmark has condemned the burnings as "provocative and shameful acts," but says it does not have the power to ban non-violent demonstrators.

On Tuesday, Egypt summoned the chargé d’affaires at the Swedish Embassy in Cairo to express the Egyptian government and people's total rejection of these incidents. 

Several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, summoned Swedish envoys to protest Quran-burning incidents in Europe.

Last week, Iraq expelled the Swedish ambassador in Baghdad and recalled its ambassador to Copenhagen.
