To address the high rate of traffic accidents and improve Egypt's transportation network, the government launched the National Road Project in 2014.
The initiative aims to revamp and upgrade 7,000 out of the total 23,000-kilometre road network in the country.
The project also involved installing advanced speed radars and cameras on highways for better traffic regulation enforcement and imposing stricter penalties for traffic violations.
A report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in August 2022 showed that road accident injuries in Egypt reduced commendably by 9.3 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year, indicating progress in road safety measures.
Although road accident injuries were reduced in 2021, CAPMAS reported a 15.2 percent increase in deaths, with 7,101 people nationwide losing their lives compared to 6,164 the previous year.
