Egypt's Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Assem El-Gazzar, stated that ministry representatives are continuously monitoring the construction site in order to speed up unit completion and guarantee the quality of execution.
Relocating government ministries and institutions to the New Administrative Capital started in March 2023, as 50,000 public employees will work from the 1.5 million m2 Government District when the relocation process is complete.
The new capital, which is 60 km outside Cairo and double the size of the Cairo governorate, has received 40,000 personnel and 100 government entities, including 30 ministries, according to a July announcement by Presidential Spokesperson Ahmed Fahmy.
The Government District consists of 10 ministerial complexes that will eventually contain the Cabinet, the House of Representatives, the Senate, and 34 ministries.
The state employees whose jobs were transferred had the choice of applying for a new dwelling unit closer to the new capital with a housing allowance of EGP 4,000 monthly or receiving a transport allowance of EGP 2,000 per month.
Deliverance of the first phase of the New Administrative Capital state employees’ housing units in the neighbouring Badr City, almost 10 kilometres away from the new capital, has recently started.
According to an earlier announcement by the housing ministry, the first phase featured 376 residential structures with 9,024 completely equipped dwelling units that cost about EGP 500,000 apiece.
“I received my 113 m2 housing unit in Badr City two weeks ago after paying around EGP 127,000, including EGP 35,000 advance payment, EGP 85,000 for acquisition, and EGP 7,500 for facilities costs,” a state employee, who received his housing unit within the first phase, told Ahram Online.
The employee disclosed that he would make monthly payments of EGP 900 for seven years, with the government making housing allowance payments of EGP 4,000 on his behalf.
He continues by saying that after seven years of installments, he will have paid approximately EGP 200,000 and the government will have contributed EGP 300,000.
In November 2021, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ordered that government offices and state employees be gradually relocated to the Government District of the new city beginning the following month.
El-Sisi has hailed the inauguration of the new capital and relocation of government employees as marking the “birth of a new republic,” and, “a new era of modern governmental work.”
