Cairo Metro Line 3 new phase to start experimental operation in October: Official

The last segment of the Cairo Metro Line 3 (3C) is scheduled for experimental operation in October ahead of inauguration during the first half of 2024, Chairman of the National Tunnels Authority Tarek Gewaily revealed on Tuesday.

"The metro's passenger capacity is expected to reach 15 million per month after the completion and the operation of 3C," Gewaily explained in TV remarks on CBC channel.

According to Gewaily, the third phase of the 3rd Line will feature the opening of six new stations: Sudan, Imbaba, Bouhy, Qawmiya Arabiya, Ring Road, and Rod El-Farag Axis. 

The line will connect with Line 2 of the metro system at Cairo University Station.

The 3C segment of the line will include a total of 15 stations and runs 17.7 kilometres long.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) provided 600 million euro in funding for the completion of the line, making the project the largest backed by the bank in Africa to date.

The French transport company RTP Dev operates the line.
