In numbers, the report states that there were 55,991 traffic-related injuries in 2022, a rise from 51,511 in 2021. The figures represent a slip to the past as road accident injuries in 2020 numbered 56,789.

7,762 people died as a consequence of these accidents in 2022, an increase of 6 percent from the 7,326 people who died in the year before.

Similar to the year before, the governorate of Daqahliya reported 12,051 injuries, which was the greatest amount. In contrast, Qalyubia had the fewest injuries ever reported at 200.

Injuries to passengers were highest in 2022 with a total of 16,607, followed by injuries to pedestrians with 15,580.

15,881 children under the age of 15 were injured in road accidents, making up a sizable portion of those hurt, followed by 10,098 people under the age of 25. In addition, those under the age of 35 reported 7,717 injuries, while those 65 and older had the fewest injuries, at 1,833.

Railway accidents

The CAPMAS report on railway mishaps showed an increase in train accidents but a decrease in the number of injured passengers.

In 2022, there were 1,046 train accidents, up from 978 in 2021, a 7 percent increase. However, there were 28 percent fewer injuries, from 768 to 554, than there were previously.

In contrast, the CAPMAS also noted a marginal yearly increase between 2021 and 2022, with the number of fatalities related to train accidents being recorded at 410 as opposed to 405—a 1.2 percent increase.

At a rate of 77 percent, the report assigned third parties the majority of the blame. 

As part of ongoing efforts to develop and upgrade the nation's road system as part of the 2014 National Road Project, the government has been aiming to prevent traffic accidents by enhancing road safety measures.

In addition, the Egyptian government has been carrying out large-scale, multibillion-pound initiatives to upgrade an antiquated signaling system and replace hundreds of outdated train carriages.

The railway plan also entails enhancing and outfitting workshops with contemporary tools and implementing automatic train control with a speed control system in the event of an emergency.

The country is also currently constructing monorail lines in cooperation with international companies. Additionally, Egypt signed a protocol in March with Spanish high-speed train manufacturer Talgo to manufacture railway passenger carriages domestically.
