Egypt's unemployment rate at 7% with 2.1 million jobless: CAPMAS

Egypt reported 2.169 million unemployed individuals in the second quarter of 2023, comprising seven percent of the total workforce, according to a report from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) released on Tuesday.

In comparison to the first quarter of the current year, the number of unemployed decreased by 2,000 individuals. However, when measured against the second quarter of the previous year, there was an increase of 18,000 individuals, marking a 0.8 percent rise.

The number of unemployed males (1.228 million) was higher than that of females (951,000).

Unemployment was higher in urban areas (10.1 percent) than in rural areas (4.6 percent).

The report also highlighted that a significant proportion of the unemployed population were youth aged 15-29, accounting for 61.8 per cent of the total unemployed.

Workforce size
 

The total number of people in the workforce in Q2 increased from 30.571 million in the previous quarter to 30.969 million, an increase of 400,000 people or 1.3 percent.

The total workforce consists of 25.514 million males and 5.455 million females. 

Among these, 13.375 million individuals were part of the urban workforce, while the rural areas have 17.594 million individuals.
