Photos showed massive smoke billowing from the forest, seven kilometres from the city.

The civil protection department in South Sinai deployed eight fire engines from Sharm El-Sheikh to help put out the fire and prevent its spread to neighbouring areas, upping the total number of fire engines present at the scene to 14, a security statement said.

The statement added that the fire was spreading among trees due to powerful winds travelling at speeds exceeding 35 kilometres per hour.

The causes of the fire are still unknown, and efforts to put out the fire are ongoing.

South Sinai, a major tourist destination, is witnessing scorching weather, especially during the daytime, hitting highs of 43 degrees Celsius.
