Held in Kenya and scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 September, the Nairobi meeting brings together leaders from the 54-nation continent to define a shared vision of Africa's green development.
During her speech, Fouad pointed out that the implementation of national adaptation projects, especially in developing and African countries, places a burden on national budgets, read the ministry’s statement.
This burden necessitates an increase in international support to enhance the capacity of these countries to cope with the negative effects of climate change, Fouad stressed.
The minister called on leaders of developed countries to fulfil their commitments by providing the necessary support to developing countries to expand their adaptation activities.
She stressed the need to double the current level of adaptation financing to achieve a 50/50 balance between mitigation and adaptation funding.
Fouad highlighted Egypt’s national efforts to adapt to climate change repercussions, including the implementation of various projects to protect coastlines from rising sea levels and managing water resources through projects such as canal lining and efficient irrigation techniques.
The environment minister noted that research is being conducted to develop new crop varieties capable of withstanding extreme climatic conditions resulting from global warming, the statement concluded.
National efforts towards climate adaptation and mitigation
Egypt, like numerous other nations, faces the challenge of adapting its agricultural industry to climate change.
To address this issue, Egypt's Ministry of International Cooperation launched the Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy Programme (NWFE) in July 2022.
The programme aims to execute multiple projects directed at the water, food, and energy sectors, with the potential to strengthen initiatives and policies promoting climate adaptation.
Regarding climate change mitigation efforts Egypt announced its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in June, which include setting more ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and securing the necessary financing to achieve them.
The updated NDC document reveals that Egypt plans to reduce GHG emissions from electricity generation, transmission, and distribution by 37 per cent by 2030, representing an improvement over its previous target of 33 per cent.
During Egypt's presidency of COP27 in 2022, the international initiative known as Action on Water, Adaptation, and Resilience (AWARe) was launched.
The initiative provides transitional adaptation solutions for both the planet and its people, with a focus on the world's most vulnerable communities and ecosystems in Africa.
