Poland's president said Tuesday the EU member plans to spend more than four percent of its gross domestic product on defense next year amid security concerns over the war in neighboring Ukraine.

"Next year, we plan to spend 137 billion zloty ($33 billion) on defense. That is more than four percent of our GDP," President Andrzej Duda said at a military trade fair in Kielce, Poland, quoted by the Polish news agency PAP.

That marks an increase on the 4 percent of GDP that it had pledged to spend this year as well as the 2 percent of GDP minimum agreed to by NATO allies.
