Egypt fullback Mohamed Hamdi tore a ligament while playing in Friday’s 1-0 win over Ethiopia in the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) revealed early on Saturday.

The 28-year old Pyramids FC player was replaced just few minutes before the final whistle after picking up a strong injury after colliding with a teammate.

“Scans revealed that Hamdi has a torn ligament,” read a short statement by the EFA without disclosing any further details or for how long the player will remain on the sidelines.

Hamdi is now doubtful for Monday’s friendly match against Tunisia.

The Pharaohs’ Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria said after the Ethiopia game that the technical staff had yet to determine whether they would call a replacement for Hamdi or not and would wait until they reach a final evaluation of his injury.

Zamalek left back Ahmed Fatouh is the prime candidate to replace him but yet there concerns regarding his fitness for the game.

Under the leadership of Vitoria, Egypt further solidified their hold on top spot in Group D of the African qualifiers, amassing 15 points, having already secured their qualification before Friday’s match. Meanwhile, Ethiopia sits at the bottom with four points.
