French striker Anthony Modeste
“Yes, the club is interested,” the French player said on Friday when asked about the plans of the Egyptian club by German newspaper Bild.
The 35-year-old attacker, currently a free agent after ending his contract in the Bundesliga last June, is rumoured to soon be joining Ahly according to Egyptian media.
Despite local reports that Ahly is in advanced talks to sign Modeste, Bild said that it is not yet confirmed that he will accept the offer; adding that the player still hopes for an offer from the Bundesliga.
“He recently rejected offers from Turkey and the 2nd league in Germany, and is still hoping for a more attractive employer. He wants to play at a high level for another one or two years,” the German newspaper added.
Modeste has played for several clubs in Europe such as Nice, Bordeaux, Blackburn Rovers, Hoffenheim, FC Cologne and Saint-Etienne.
In August 2022, he left Cologne for Dortmund, netting two goals in 28 games.
During his career with three different clubs in the Bundesliga, Modeste has scored 85 goals in 209 appearances.
“If an offer comes, then I have to see what happens next. Luckily there are always offers, but it has to be right,” the player recently told Bild.
Without a club affiliation since June, Modeste has been training with the 4th division club Fortuna Cologne since the beginning of August to keep himself fit for a new adventure, according to Bild.
The eleven-time African champions Ahly ended last season as the winners of both the Egyptian Premier League and the African Champions League.
