Death toll from Storm Daniel in Libya rises to 2,800: Libyan Red Crescent

At least 2,800 people died in severe floods that swept through the cities of eastern Libya after Storm Daniel hit the country Sunday, reported Anadolu News Agency on Tuesday citing the Libyan Red Crescent.

The new death toll is for the whole eastern region and includes those who died by drowning and in building collapses, according to the Red Crescent

Rescue operations are underway in the affected areas as 7,000 families have been displaced, the source reported.

They added that a large number of people remain missing in severely stricken areas, such as Derna, where telephone communications have been cut off.

On Tuesday morning, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi declared a three-day mourning in the country in solidarity with the victims of humanitarian disasters in Morocco and Libya.

Furthermore, El-Sisi directed the Armed Forces to provide humanitarian aid, including relief teams, rescue equipment, and shelter camps, in cooperation and coordination with Libyan and Moroccan authorities
