​Legendary graphic designer Irma Boom gives a talk at TCC’s Ewart Memorial Hall

Arabic courses registration is open from 3 to 17 September, 

2023. Registration is open for face-to-face Egyptian Arabic and classical Arabic courses offered by Ahlan World school (www.ahlan-world.org), at the premises of the Italian Cultural Institute. Italian courses registration for face-to-face/online general courses is open (session October-December 2023). The course will last for 50 hours and will be carried out face-to-face at Italian Cultural Institute in Zamalek and Downtown and online through Zoom, with native/bilingual teachers. 

Duration from 14 October to 10 December, 2023. 

Schedule: three times a week determined by the Institute in only one of the following timings: (Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday/Saturday, from 5-7pm or from 7-9pm). It is not possible to choose the timing in advance as it is subject to assignment based on the total number of the students registered and the teacher’s availability. Deadline is 16 September, 2023. No registration will be accepted via email or after this date. The cost is 2400 Egyptian pounds. 

The fee for the face-to-face/online placement test, which will be organized between 26 and 27 September, costs 300 Egyptian pounds. Make sure to attach a copy of the payment receipt and of the valid identity document into the registration form in order to complete the online registration.

In case of not reaching the minimum number of candidates at a certain level, it cannot be activated and in this case only, the payments can be refunded or used as a credit only for the next session. For any other information please write to [email protected]

Sun 17, 5.30pm: “Reusing Heritage – Cairo and Beyond” ARCHiNOS Architecture is hosting a presentation and a discussion about the concept of adaptive reuse of historic buildings. It will feature Paul Morel, project leader at Stadsherstel organisation, and the researcher and critic René Boer, both from Amsterdam. The experts will give presentations about adaptive reuse examples from Amsterdam and beyond. The presentations will be preceded by a short walk/site visit to the spaces adaptively re-used by ARCHiNOS in the Qaitbey area and will be followed by a public discussion. 

The presentations: Agnieszka Dobrowolska- ARCHiNOS Architecture Agnieszka will guide a short walking tour in the vicinity of Complex of Sultan Qaitbey to introduce the adaptive re-use programme implemented by ARCHiNOS Architecture of the listed monuments and non-listed heritage buildings. Since 2014, ARCHiNOS has been working on a multifaceted, multidisciplinary project in Cairo’s “City of the Dead” with the overarching objective of reintegration of heritage into the life of the local community. The project comprises the conservation and preservation of historic monuments, urban uplift, promotion of intangible heritage –particularly of traditional crafts—and of cultural tourism, as well as extensive programmes for social development and contemporary art and culture. They will meet at 5.30pm in front of the MASQ to have a short tour of the historic buildings adapted by ARCHiNOS. Then, Boer and Morel will give their presentations at the MASQ at 6pm. A discussion moderated by ARCHiNOS’ director Agnieszka Dobrowolska will follow, addressing the issues of adaptive re-use of historic spaces, both registered and unlisted, tangible and intangible heritage, investment potential, and the role and benefits for the local communities.

Tues 19, 7-9pm: “Queen of Books” is an exciting talk with the legendary graphic designer Irma Boom. Discover the secrets behind her iconic book designs and gain valuable knowledge from her innovative technique. Boom is a Dutch graphic designer who specializes in bookmarking. Over her career, she has created more than 300 books. She is reputed for her artist’s autonomy within her field and her experimental approach that challenges the convention of traditional books in both physical design and printed content.
