Mohieldin, also the UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, urged reliance on advanced technology to predict climate change and promote climate action.

He made his remarks as he participated in a session entitled 'Harnessing the potential of AI for urban climate action,' organized on Thursday in New York by Google and the Centre for Public Impact at the New School and World Resources Institute.

AI can contribute to enhancing the ability of satellites to monitor and evaluate the impacts of climate change, including monitoring forest fires and identifying sources of carbon dioxide in the environment, Mohieldin noted.

He added that through AI, the world could also gain a clearer perception of some climate change-related matters, such as the response of oceans to environmental and climate phenomena and the extent to which oceans are vulnerable to climate change.

Furthermore, the UN climate champion called for utilizing AI in mobilizing climate finance and accelerating innovation and community participation in climate action.

Mohieldin also pointed to the cooperation between the UN high-level climate champions and Google to release a map application that helps predict the potential risks of climate change and proposes the best actions to address them.

He said he hoped to announce the action plan for the application during the upcoming UN climate change conference (COP28) in Dubai in November.
