In a recorded speech to the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Shaker announced that Egypt concluded the ratification of CNS.
The CNS was adopted by the IAEA in 1994 and has been ratified by over 100 countries. It requires those countries that operate nuclear power plants to establish and maintain a nuclear safety regime that complies with the Convention's requirements.
In response to Egypt's ratification of the Nuclear Safety Agreement, "Rafael Grossi," Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, expressed his appreciation for this significant step, highlighting Egypt's steadfast commitment in this field as it expands its nuclear program.
Recalling his visit to Cairo in December 2021 and meeting with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Grossi stated that the agency will continue its outstanding collaboration with Egypt, soon to increase with Egypt's imminent implementation of the "Dabaa" nuclear power plant project.
Mohamed El-Molla, Egypt's Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the IAEA, said the ratification of the CNS was well-received by other countries participating in the IAEA General Conference.
El-Molla added that Egypt's membership in the CNS reflects the country's growing commitment to nuclear safety.
Egypt is expected to participate in the next meeting of the CNS Contracting Parties in Vienna in 2026.
The country is constructing four nuclear power reactors at the El-Dabaa site in the Mediterranean Sea, with the first reactor operating in 2029.
