Sisi discusses de-escalation in Gaza with Palestinian president, European officials

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed Sunday in phone calls with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, German Chancellor Olaf Schulz and President of the European Council Charles Michel ways to defuse the crisis in Gaza.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas the military escalation in the Palestinian territories, emphasizing the dangers that a lack of a political solution poses.  

The two leaders also expressed their grave concern that the situation may worsen in a way that threatens the lives of civilians and the security and stability of the region, according to the Egyptian Presidency.

El-Sisi and Abbas emphasized that achieving sustainable stability in the region requires a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution in accordance with international legitimacy references.

According to the Egyptian Presidency, El-Sisi also discussed efforts to stop the current escalation between the Palestinian and Israeli sides in a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Schulz.

He agreed with the German chancellor on the importance of stopping the military escalation and preventing the situation from deteriorating into vicious circles of violence, thus inflicting human suffering and threatening security and stability in the region.

El-Sisi stressed the need to address the root causes of the conflict by advancing efforts to settle the Palestinian issue in a fair, comprehensive, and sustainable manner based on the two-state solution, the presidency said. 

Furthermore, El-Sisi received a phone call from the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in which he discussed the ongoing efforts in collaboration with all the regional and international parties to spare the region further turmoil and instability.

According to the Egyptian presidency, the President of the European Council confirmed Europe's commitment to intensifying consultations and exchanging visions with President El-Sisi to end the state of violence and the escalating tension.

For his part, El-Sisi emphasized the importance of ending the ongoing escalation and exercising self-restraint by all parties. He also highlighted the threat to civilian lives and the danger such an escalation poses to the stability and security of the region.
