"There is no intention, no plan and, frankly, no desire by the Israelis for US combat troops to be involved in this conflict," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

The conflict, which saw Israel impose a “complete siege” on the Gaza Strip following militant group Hamas's surprise attack on Israel, has killed scores of civilians on both sides.

Gaza has witnessed unprecedented Israeli air strikes over the last couple of days, that have killed more than 1,350 Palestinians. According to the Palestinian health ministry, children and senior citizens account for 60 percent of casualties.

On the Israeli side, some 1,200 people were killed and 150 were taken captive in Hamas' surprise attack, the worst attack on Israel in 50 years.
