Palestinians start to flee to south Gaza amid Israel army warning - Day 7 as it happened

Israel’s military orders Palestinian civilians to evacuate Gaza and relocate to the south of the territory within 24 hours sending panic through civilians and aid workers already struggling under Israeli airstrikes and a blockade.

00:20 Russia proposed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on the Israel-Hamas conflict that calls for a humanitarian ceasefire and condemns violence against civilians and all acts of terrorism, according to a draft text seen by Reuters.

The draft resolution also calls for the release of hostages, humanitarian aid access and the safe evacuation of civilians in need. The text was given to the 15-member council during a closed-door meeting on the conflict on Friday, diplomats said.

23:18 US President Joe Biden said the situation in Gaza is a top priority for him: "It's also a priority for me to urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. At my direction our teams are working in the region, including communicating directly with the governments of Israel, Egypt, Jordan and other Arab nations and the United Nations to surge support."

22:35 UN chief Antonio Guterres appealed for the protection of basic human rights as the Israeli war on Gaza spiraled, stressing that "even wars have rules" and warning against using hostages as human shields.

"The situation in Gaza has reached a dangerous new low," Guterres said ahead of a Security Council meeting on the volatile situation.

"We need immediate humanitarian access throughout Gaza, so that we can get fuel, food and water to everyone in need," he said, adding that the blockaded enclave's health system was on the brink of collapse.

20:20 The Government Media Office in Gaza has reported that 70 Palestinians lost their lives, with over 200 sustaining injuries due to an Israeli forces airstrike on a convoy of displaced individuals within the Gaza Strip.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior in Gaza conveyed to Al Jazeera, "There is no sanctuary here, evident from the assault by the occupation on vehicles transporting displaced civilians."

18:00 The U.N. Security Council is set to meet behind closed doors Friday afternoon to discuss the Israel-Hamas war as Palestinians stream out of northern Gaza on orders from the Israeli military.

Friday’s council meeting was scheduled before the evacuation order was issued and added still more urgency to the discussion. The U.N. has said the order affects 1.1 million people, about half Gaza’s population, and could turn an already dire humanitarian crisis into a calamity.

17:30 Israel shelled a border region in southern Lebanon, two Lebanese security sources said, after a blast occurred on the border fence, according to the Israeli army.

One of the security sources said the shelling followed an infiltration attempt from the Lebanese side of the border, while the Israeli army said it was responding to a blast that caused "light damage" to the border barrier.

12:30 Iran urges US to 'control' Israel to avert regional war. The United States must rein in Israel to avert a regional spillover of the war with Hamas, Iran's top diplomat said Friday during his visit to Beirut, adding Tehran was seeking to safeguard Lebanon's security.

"If the Americans want to prevent the war in the region from developing, they must control Israel," Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said. "One of the goals of our trip is to stress on Lebanon's security," he added.

Iran's foreign minister said on Thursday opening a "new front" against Israel would depend on Israel's actions in Gaza.
