Humanitarian aid continues to flow into Gaza as Israel steps up strikes - Day 16 as it happened

23:45 US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed Sunday after a second aid convoy reached Gaza from Egypt that such assistance will continue, as Israel keeps attacking the Hamas-ruled territory, the White House said.

"The leaders affirmed that there will now be continued flow of this critical assistance into Gaza," the White House said after the two leaders spoke by telephone.

23:00: Elysee palace announced that President Emmanuel Macron will visit Israel on Tuesday to show his support for the country amid its war with Hamas.

Macron visit follow a series of Western leaders visits including United States President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

22:00 The Israeli military’s liaison to the Palestinians confirms that Israel allowed the entry of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip via Egypt. 

"Humanitarian aid from the United Nations containing only water, food, and medical equipment was brought into the southern Gaza Strip today, through the Rafah crossing in Egypt,” the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) says in a statement.

20:45 One Israeli soldier was killed and three other wounded during clashes with Hamas fighters near Gaza, the Israeli army spokesman announced.

19:40 The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees said Sunday that 29 of its staff had been killed in Gaza since the outbreak of the war on Gaza.

This comes after earlie reports that 17 aid trucks were crossing into Gaza earlier on Sunday.

18:00 4,741 Palestinians were killed in Gaza and the West Bank since the beginning of the war on Gaza on 7 October, the Palestinians health ministry announced on Sunday. 15,898 other people are urgent while 1,450 including 800 children are still missing under the ruble, the statement added.

Six trucks with fuel to power generators at two hospitals crossed from Egypt, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) and an Egyptian source told AFP.

15:30 The death toll of Palestinians killed in Israeli aggression on Gaza climbed to 4,651 martyrs, including 1,873 children, 1,023 women, and 187 elderly people, while 14,245 were injured since the start of the war, the Palestinian Health Ministry announced.

The ministry indicated that 70 percent of the victims of Israeli raids are women, children, and the elderly, adding that it received 1,450 reports of missing persons still under the rubble.

The Palestinian ministry also said that 266 people were killed in Gaza, including 117 children, within 24 hours. 

The Government Media Office in Gaza said that 70 percent of the population of the strip are outside their homes in about 220 shelter centers or host gatherings.

14:45 17 trucks carrying humanitarian aid crossed the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza on Sunday shortly after 2pm as the border crossing opened for the second time in as many days, according to Al-Qahera News channel.

20 trucks carrying food and medical supplies crossed into Gaza through the Rafah border crossing to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to 2.3 million Palestinians who have been under a complete Israeli blockade - food, water, and fuel - for two weeks.

This was made possible after an agreement was reached between Egypt, Israel, and the US that allowed for the opening of the crossing for the first time since the war between Hamas and Israel started on 7 October.

14:30 More than 1,750 children have already been killed by Israeli strikes launched against the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian territory's health ministry.

Hospitals packed with patients and displaced people are running low on medical supplies and fuel for generators, forcing doctors to perform surgeries with sewing needles, using kitchen vinegar as a disinfectant, and without anesthesia.

"We have currently 120 neonates who are in incubators, out of which we have 70 neonates with mechanical ventilation, and of course, this is where we are extremely concerned," said UNICEF spokesman Jonathan Crickx.

13:00 The Director of UNRWA Operations in Gaza said that the situation in Gaza is terrible, warning that humanitarian supplies are very limited, and food and drinking water have become scarce.

“We need a sustainable supply line of aid to avoid a disaster in the Strip," the UNRWA official said.

12:30  The Government’s Media Office in Gaza said that the number of mosques destroyed by the Israeli occupation has risen to 31, and 3 churches were severely damaged.

The office also documented that the occupation targeted more than 15 gatherings of citizens in markets, restaurants, and bakeries.

According to various reports, the vast majority of the 4,500 Palestinians who were killed in Israeli airstrikes on homes and infrastructure in Gaza in the last two weeks were women and children.

11:30 Israeli occupation army killed at least five people early Sunday in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Two were killed in an airstrike on a mosque in the town of Jenin.

Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in clashes with Israeli troops, arrest raids, and attacks by Israeli settlers since the Gaza war erupted.

Sunday’s fatalities brought the death toll in the West Bank to 90 Palestinians since the war broke out on 7 October, according to the Health Ministry.

Israel has arrested hundreds of Palestinians from the West Bank since the war began.

11:10  Al-Qassam Brigades said they fired a new missile barrage towards Tel Aviv and central Israel.

11:00 Late Saturday, an Israeli military spokesman said: "From today, we are increasing the strikes and minimizing the danger for our troops." 

"We will increase the attacks and therefore I called on Gaza City residents to continue moving south for their safety."

10:45 The Egyptian Red Crescent is standing by at the Rafah border crossing into the besieged Gaza Strip with 17 trucks carrying medicine, medical supplies, humanitarian aid, and food to deliver to Palestinians in the strip, according to Masrawy.

On Saturday, per an agreement reached between Cairo, Washington, and Tel Aviv, 20 trucks carrying food and medical supplies were allowed to enter the Gaza Strip to relieve 2.3 million Palestinians facing a catastrophic humanitarian situation who have been under a complete blockade by Israel since the war started on 7 October.

In a statement, Hamas hit out at the lack of aid arriving, despite the arrival of 20 trucks in the Palestinian territory on Saturday.

It said there were now 1.4 million displaced people in the Gaza Strip.

"The aid that arrived in Gaza is not enough for one day. We call on the international community to pressure the Israeli government to bring in thousands of trucks," said the statement.

10:30 At least 55 Palestinians were killed in Israeli raids on Gaza overnight and 30 homes were destroyed, according to figures released by Palestinian authorities. 

4469 Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes and gunfire in the Gaza Strip and West Bank since 7 October, the ministry said.

Late Saturday, an airstrike hit a cafe in the southern town of Khan Younis where displaced people had gathered to charge their phones. The nearby Nasser Hospital said 12 people were killed and 75 wounded.

10:20  In western Iraq, several hundred miles to the east of the Gaza Strip, Katyusha rockets on Sunday targeted the Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts US and other international forces, and one blast was heard inside the base, Reuters reported citing two army sources.

On Saturday, defense systems at Ain al-Asad intercepted and shot down two drones while they were hovering near the base.

10:00  The Pentagon moved Saturday to step up US military readiness in the Middle East in response to the "recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces" across the region.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said he had activated deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and additional Patriot battalions "throughout the region."

"Finally, I have placed an additional number of forces on prepare-to-deploy orders as part of prudent contingency planning, to increase their readiness and ability to quickly respond as required," Austin said.

9:50 Israel launched fresh airstrikes on Sunday against Damascus and Aleppo airports in Syria, according to state media.

It is the third time Israel has launched simultaneous airstrikes against the two main airports in the country since Tel Aviv started its war in Gaza.

The airstrikes on Damascus Airport killed a worker and injured another, according to state media SANA.

The transport ministry said the repeated Israeli airstrikes put the two airports out of service and flights were diverted to Latakia.
