Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has warned that an Israeli ground invasion of the Gaza Strip could result in a very dangerous situation including the loss of more lives.

It is enough that so far more than 6,000 Palestinians have been killed – half of whom are children, El-Sisi said in a joint press briefing with French President Emmanuel Macron following extensive talks in Cairo on Wednesday.

El-Sisi said he agreed with Macron on the importance of the current crisis “not to expand to include other parties or other regions.”

He asserted that all efforts should focus on containing the escalation in the Gaza Strip while reiterating the country’s refusal to allow the displacement of Palestinians from the strip into Egypt.

“Not only [because] we in Egypt will not allow it, but it is perilous to the [Palestinian] cause,” he assured.

President Macron understands the danger of such a matter, El-Sisi said, noting that would complicate the prospects of the two-state solution to resolve the conflict.

El-Sisi said he concurred with Macron that “the exit of the Palestinians is not a solution,” adding “[if] the two-state solution has not been materialized while the Palestinians exist [on their land], it is impossible it would succeed when they do not.”

The Egyptian president also blamed the absence of a political horizon for resolving the Palestinian cause for, not only the current escalation but also for the latest five rounds of escalation between Israel and Palestine over the past years.

Additionally, El-Sisi said he agreed with his French counterpart on the necessity of delivering humanitarian aid at a scale proportion to the needs of 2.3 million people in the besieged enclave.

The blockade of the Palestinian strip and cutting the power and fuel supplies have repercussions on the humanitarian situation there, El-Sisi clarified.

From his side, President Macron announced that Paris would be sending a ship to support hospitals in Gaza.

Both presidents also stressed the need to allow the opportunity and time to release more captives held in the Gaza Strip in order to calm the situation as much as possible, according to El-Sisi.

Egypt is “keen to play a positive role in the crisis,” said El-Sisi, while affirming that the Palestinian issue “is the cause of all causes for us.”

He also called for reviving the long-frozen Israel-Palestine peace process, asserting that solving the decades-old problem based on the two-state solution will have a positive impact on peace.

The Egyptian president also reiterated rejection of any attacks on civilians from both sides, while urged an even-handed approach while talking about the victims.

“It is very important that when we talk about this matter, we speak according to one standard,” he added.

Macron said France has a vision that focuses on confronting terrorism and simultaneously protecting civilians.

"We have to avoid escalation and the increase in the level of tensions in the region."

"We have to work toward a political resolution based on the two-state solution to the conflict," Macron stressed.
