Mohamed Kordofani's Goodbye Julia scooped Best Director in a Debut Feature Film and Best Leading Actress awards during the 18th Cyprus International Film Festival (1-5 November) in the Cypriot capital of Nicosia.

Goodbye Julia

This is one of the many accolades that Goodbye Julia scored since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award, the Golden Camera Award, and the Freedom Prize.

The film is also Sudan's choice for the Oscar's Foreign Language Film Award (2024).

Directed by Mohamed Kordofani, Goodbye Julia is a drama that tells the story of Mona, a retired singer from northern Sudan trapped in an unhappy marriage. Mona is wracked with guilt after covering up a murder, and to make amends she takes in a widow named Julia, who hails from South Sudan, along with her son Daniel.

The film stars are Eiman Yousif, Siran Riak, Nazar Goma, and Ger Duany.

The Sudanese film was scheduled to have its MENA premiere during the sixth edition of the El Gouna Film Festival (12 to 20 October), prior to the festival's postponement "in light of the distressing situation in Gaza."

Goodbye Julia was released across almost 20 cinemas in Egypt on 25 October.

Subtitles in both Arabic and English accompany the film.
