EgyptAir and Airbus signed the deal during the 2023 Dubai Airshow in the presence of Yehia Zakaria, the CEO of EgyptAir Holding Co. and Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International Christian Scherer, according to a statement by the aircraft manufacturer.

The transaction is worth $3.2 billion ahead of likely discounts, reported the AFP, citing Airbus's latest published list price.

The eco-efficient A350-900s will provide the state-owned airline with 25% less fuel burn and help reduce emissions, Airbus said, adding that passengers will enjoy the comfortable and capacious cabins, with 340 seats each.

"As we tackle growing demand across our network, this aircraft is the optimal choice," Zakaria said.

Scherer, for his part, said the A350-900s will be EgyptAir’s flagship aircraft, effectively expanding the airline’s offerings and opening new routes, especially to the western US and the Far East.

EgyptAir has been proud of its existing Airbus fleet, participating on the first day of the Dubai Airshow with one of its seven latest A321neo aircraft, manufactured by Airbus.

Meanwhile, EgyptAir signed an agreement on Monday with Air Lease Corporation for 18 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, marking the first deal between the lessor and the airline, with deliveries scheduled for 2025-2026.

EgyptAir transported 10 million passengers through the 2022-2023 fiscal year - a 30 percent increase over 2018-2019, Zakaria told Al-Arabiya, in reference to the year that preceded the coronavirus pandemic.

The national flag carrier's fleet is 15 percent larger in the first half of this year than in 2022, a report by EgyptAir said in August.

EgyptAir CEO Mohamed Moussa told CNBC Arabia in June that the airline received four Airbus A321s early in 2023 and ordered new planes for delivery in the first quarter of 2024, upping the fleet to 78 aircraft.

The ongoing development of the air transport fleet comes while flights to Egypt have surged by 29 percent between January and June of 2023, reaching a total of 191,000 flights, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
