A delegation consisting of four prominent security officials in the Hamas-led Gaza government's interior ministry, headed up by Palestinian Legislative Council member Ahmed Bahr, is set to arrive in Cairo on Sunday.
According to an informed Palestinian source, the delegation – which was postponed from Saturday – has already reached Egypt's Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip. Delegation members are set to arrive in Cairo, where they are slated to meet with new Egyptian Defence Minister General Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, within hours.
Discussions are expected to include proposals to initiate a joint security committee between the Egyptian government and the Hamas government in Gaza in an effort to bolster security and surveillance on their common border.
Meeting participants are also expected to discuss the results of recent investigations by Fathi Hamad, head of the Gaza government's interior ministry, on Egypt's ongoing military operations in the Sinai Peninsula and the reported destruction of tunnels linking Egypt with the besieged Gaza Strip.
Hamas interior ministry spokesman Ihab El-Ghaseen, for his part, stressed the lack of Palestinian involvement in the 5 August attack near the Rafah crossing in which 16 Egyptian border guards lost their lives.
According to an informed Egyptian source, investigations have been conducted with suspected militants affiliated with the Ezz Eddin Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.
