Since then, Israel launched an air, land and sea assault on the Gaza Strip, in which at least 17,997 people, most of them children and women, have been killed, according to the Palestinian health ministry figuers.
The ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said there were an additional 49,229 wounded.
