Preview: Buoyant Ahly aim to win Egypt Super Cup title after Club World Cup success

Ahram Online , Sunday 24 Dec 2023

After securing a bronze medal in the FIFA Club World Cup, Egyptian champions Ahly will shift their focus to the Egypt Super Cup as they aim to continue their winning momentum.

Ahly vs Ceramica Cleopatra

This edition of the Super Cup, held in the United Arab Emirates, will feature four teams instead of the usual two.

Ahly will face Ceramica Cleopatra on Monday, while Pyramids FC will take on Modern Future FC earlier in the day.

The winners of both games will face off in the final scheduled for Thursday 28 December.

Ahly's goalkeeper, Mohamed El-Shennawi, expressed the team's determination to win the Egyptian Super Cup, stating,

"We have turned the page on the FIFA Club World Cup, and now it is time to focus on the Egyptian Super Cup, and we are ready to win it. "

Despite the busy schedule with five games in a couple of weeks, Ahly's Swiss coach, Marcel Koller, downplayed the negative impact of the congested fixtures, emphasizing the depth of his squad and their ability to handle such circumstances.

Koller hinted at making some changes to the squad for the match against Ceramica Cleopatra.

"Tomorrow's game will see some modifications in the team's lineup, and there will be players who will play for the first time.

"I have full confidence in all Ahly players and their capabilities." Ahly has a strong track record in the Egyptian Super Cup, having won the title 13 times in the past.

On the other hand, Ceramica Cleopatra's coach Ayman El-Ramadi believes his team has a good chance against Ahly, highlighting that there is no significant difference between his side and the Cairo giants.

Ceramica Cleopatra, who qualified for this edition of the Egyptian Super Cup as winners of the League Cup, currently sit fifth in the league table.

The previous encounter between the two sides this season ended in a last-gasp 2-1 victory for Ahly, last month, with Ceramica Cleopatra showcasing a strong performance.

In the other match, Pyramids FC, who lost to Ahly in the previous edition of the Super Cup, will face a tough challenge against Modern Future FC earlier on Monday.

Despite suffering a surprising 1-0 home defeat against Sundowns of South Africa in the Champions League last week, Pyramids FC coach, Jaime Pacheco, voiced confidence in his team's ability to achieve positive results in the Egyptian Super Cup.

Pacheco acknowledged the potential of Future FC as an organized team with talented players.

Although Pyramids FC have a strong squad, the wealthy club, established in 2018, has yet to secure a title.

"I have confidence in the abilities of our available players to achieve positive results, even though we will be without the services of goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawi, Eslam Issa, Ibrahim Adel, and other influential players." Pyramids FC coach told the pre-match news conference on Sunday.

"The tournament's system makes it possible for us to claim the title. Our players at Pyramids FC will exert extra effort, especially considering that Future FC is an organized team with highly talented players."

Meanwhile, Modern Future's coach, Ricardo Formosinho, acknowledged the difficult task ahead against Pyramids FC but assured that his team is prepared for the game and hopes to deliver a strong performance.

“Pyramids FC are a very good team and they have excellent players,” Formosinho told the pre-match news conference on Sunday.

“We are well prepared for the game and I hope to produce a strong performance on Monday.” He concluded.

Pyramids FC participate as the Egyptian League runners-up, while Modern Future FC replace Zamalek, who were suspended from participating due to their withdrawal from the previous edition of the Super Cup.
