HerStory Films launches Egypt’s new film incubator for emerging female directors to develop and produce their short films.

incubator

Actress Mona Zaki and media specialist and publisher May Abdel-Azim co-founded the project.

During the first phase of the incubator, a specialized committee will screen 20 short films in development to select three of them for production, creating new opportunities for women to find and carve out a space for themselves in filmmaking. The incubator also aims to help female directors develop their artistic skills and bring their vision to life in telling the story.

The incubator accepts entries by applicants who have a considerable level of filmmaking experience with scripted content such as web series, short films, or commercials.

Directors applying with their short film script in development should have the legal right to produce it. They should have received no funding before applying to the incubator. In addition, they should have worked as directing assistants or creative directors on a short film, a TV commercial, or digital copies.

The call is open to all Egyptian residents and registered refugees residing in Egypt.

The eligibility criteria for the filmmakers include the following:
- Directors apply with short film script and treatment.
- Directors can also be the writers of the film script.
- Films should be limited to 15 pages – 15 minutes duration.
- Films should address gender or women-related topics and stories.
- Films should be directed and written by females (women-led projects).
- Scripts should have copyright registration.

The call for applications is open until 22 January 2024.
