The earthquake happened at 1:18pm Caito Time (GMT +2) nearly 46 kilometers southeast of Luxor City, NRIAG said in a statement.

"No casualties or property losses have been reported," the institute said.

However, NRIAG mentioned that the institute received reports from several citizens who felt the earthquake.

The last major earthquake hit the country in 1992, measuring 5.8 in magnitude, killing 541 people and injuring over 6,500 in Greater Cairo.
